Translator’s Notes:
*(I like the version of this song sung by 郁可唯 (Yisa Yu) more than Kris’ but his is still nice as well. His version is a bit more melancholic than Yisa Yu’s, and gives a different perspective on the meaning of the song. Untranslated, this song is absolutely beautiful. The use of words in the lyrics is phenomenal, and unfortunately, much of it got lost in translation. I tried my best to be as literal as possible to uphold as much of the beauty in the lyrics as I could, but even still, the significance of the lyrics and the meaning behind them is pretty much lost. You really have to understand Chinese to be able to feel the power coming from the words, and I tried to uphold this in English as best I could as well. It was kind of difficult for me to translate due to me not being a native speaker and still trying to perfect my understanding of colloquial Chinese, but I actually didn’t do as badly as I thought I would ^^ However, if there’s something that still sounds odd, then I apologize.)
*(I do not own the lyrics to this song – the lyrics belong to the writers. I typed the lyrics myself using Google Translate. I did the Pinyin and Translation myself, however. I use Traditional Chinese characters just like they do in Taiwan because I prefer them to Simplified and I taught myself Chinese using Traditional characters. Please note that Chinese is not my first language so at times, my translations might be off, too literal, or wrong. I’m still learning, and I translate songs to gain experience, so I apologize in advance for any errors ^^)
*(To translate songs, I use an online Mandarin dictionary, an online Cantonese dictionary (it is a Canto-Mando, Mando-Canto, Canto-Eng, Mando-Eng, Pinyin-Jyutping, etc., dictionary and is VERY explanatory) and a paperback Mandarin dictionary.)
*(All the awkward spacing in the Pinyin is to show the different words. It is color-coded on my computer, but I can’t keep the colors T-T)
*(When a part of the translation is in parentheses, it means that that word is implied to make the translation sound better in English. Words will be implied because Chinese is much more vague than English and sometimes doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when translated literally.)
*(Throughout the song, in the Pinyin, every time you see “不” (Bu) written with the second tone (ú) instead of the standard fourth tone (ù), it is because the character following it is also pronounced with the fourth tone. “不” is standardly pronounced with the fourth tone in Mandarin, except for when it is followed by another character of the fourth tone, in which case its pronunciation changes to tone two. I changed the pronunciation each time this happened, for example, “Bú Shì”)
*(For the character “誰” (Shei/Shui), “Shéi” is the standard pronunciation and “Shuí” is the variant. I personally have never heard a native Chinese speaker use “Shui” but I have heard those who have learned Chinese as a second language use it (for example, the Korean members of EXO-M and Super Junior-M use “Shui”). Either pronunciation is correct, I just prefer to use “Shei” and it is what is said in the lyrics.)
*(The Chinese title of this song is “時間煮雨” (Shí Jiān Zhǔ Yǔ) and it means “Time Boils in the Rain”. A more literal translation would be “Time is Boiled by the Rain” or “Time Boils the Rain”. This translation doesn’t really do the title a lot of justice, with its symbolic meaning referring to “How one is unable to go back or turn back time, and that at times the passage of time can be harsh.” (This comes from classicmag.com and the article discusses this song and the meaning of its title sung by 郁可唯 (Yu Ke Wei/Yisa Yu) for the 2013 film 小時代 (Tiny Times).)
*(In the line, “吹白我們的頭髮”, “頭髮” (Tou Fa) has two pronunciations: “Tóu Fǎ” is Taiwan pronunciation and “Tóu Fa” is Mainland/China pronunciation. “Tóu Fà” is also a Mainland/China pronunciation, but I believe that “Tóu Fa” is more commonly used.)
*(In the line, “你們還記得嗎”, “記得” (Jì Dé) is also pronounced “Jì De”. Also, the “You” in this line is for “plural you”, and since there’s really not a distinction in spoken English for the plural or singular form of “You” I decided to make it “You (guys)” even though I feel that having “Guys” in the translation really doesn’t suit the sophisticated meaning of the lyrics. I just wanted to distinguish to readers that “You” should be plural and not singular.)
*(In the line, “是否只是童言無忌”, “童言無忌” (Tóng Yán Wú Jì) is an idiom meaning “Children are naïve, so they will not avoid taboo when speaking.” I translated it as “Is it only children who are naïve?” since I thought this would help uphold the literal meaning of the lyrics but Google Translate says that it means “Break up with somebody” which I don’t think is accurate lol.)
*(In the line, “今昔何昔”, I’m not sure if the character for “Xi” should be “昔” or “夕”. I have seen many translations using both of these characters, and they don’t really mean the same thing, so I’m not certain which one I should use. I ended up using “昔” which means “Past/Former” so with this character the line translates to “The present and the past; which past?” But, with “夕” which means “Evening/Sunset/Night, etc” if you used this character the line would mean something like, “the present and the evening, which evening?” However, maybe these two characters are interchangeable because they have the same pronunciation (Xī) and so when you’re speaking you don’t hear a difference, but I couldn’t find any information on this to back up that theory, so I’m explaining my questions about this line here. I personally prefer “昔” because I think that “The present and the past…” makes more sense. If I was wrong, then I’m sorry.)
*(In the line, “等來年秋風起”, “秋風起” (Qiū Fēng Qǐ) literally means “When the autumn wind blows” and this is a metaphor for the “Arrival of autumn.”)
*(I hope you all liked my translation and I will post some more songs from the album soon. Please do not edit my translation and please credit me if you would like to use it.
