Translator’s Notes:
*(I really love this version of the song – more so than the Mandarin version – and I am so happy he sang a song in Cantonese. I am a super huge fan of Canto-pop and I loved getting the chance to translate a song. And Zhou Mi’s pronunciation was a lot better than I expected it to be, considering that Cantonese tends to be a much harder dialect to pronounce than Mandarin. He does have an obvious accent, but overall, he did a great job and he should make more Cantonese songs. I will warn you all that there are so many notes for this song; I’m not so great at translating Cantonese songs – at least, I’m not so confident doing it since I haven’t been studying Cantonese as long as Mandarin/Standard Chinese so if there are a lot of errors, then I am so sorry. I just wanted to translate this to gain some experience with the Cantonese dialect and give fans a translation to the song.)
*(I do NOT own the lyrics to this song – the lyrics belong to the writers. I typed the lyrics myself using Google Translate. The Pinyin and translation was done by me. I use Traditional Chinese characters because I like them more than Simplified characters and I taught myself Chinese using Traditional. Please note that Chinese is NOT my first language and at times my translations might be off, too literal, or wrong. I translate songs to gain experience and I’m still learning so I apologize for any errors. ^^)
*(To translate songs, I use an online Mandarin dictionary, an online Cantonese dictionary (it is a Canto-Mando, Mando-Canto, Canto-Eng, Mando-Eng, Pinyin-Jyutping, etc., dictionary and is VERY explanatory) and a paperback Mandarin dictionary.)
*(All the awkward spacing in the Pinyin is to show the different words. It is color-coded on my computer, but I can’t keep the colors T-T)
*(When a part of the translation is in parentheses, it means that that word is implied to make the translation sound better in English. Words will be implied because Chinese is much more vague than English and sometimes doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when translated literally.)
*(The Chinese title of this song is “一人的寂寞” (Jat1 Jan4 Dik1 Zik6 Mok6) and it means “One Person’s Loneliness”.)
*(In the first line, “狠心的放棄 /// 難在決定要愛理不理” the lyrics have “決絕” (Kyut3 Zyut6) but I did not hear him say that. I heard him say “決定” (Kyut3 Ding6) so I put that in the lyrics instead of “Kyut Zyut”. They both have similar meanings, “Kyut Zyut” is more commonly used in Cantonese, but I used “Kyut Ding” because that’s what I heard.)
*(If you noticed that there are number tone markers instead of the symbols you see in Mandarin Pinyin, that is because Jyutping uses numbers to mark its tones. There are six tones in Cantonese and they are as follows:
Tone 1 is a High, Level sound (
) (Ex: 媽 “Maa1”)
Tone 2 is a Low-Mid to High, Rising sound (
) (Ex: 可 “Ho2”)
Tone 3 is a Mid, Level sound (
) (Ex: 去 “Heoi3”)
Tone 4 is a Low-Mid to Low, Falling sound (
) (Ex: 誰 “Seoi4”)
Tone 5 is a Low to Low-Mid Rising sound (
) (Ex: 我 “Ngo5”)
And, Tone 6 is a Low-Mid, Level sound (
) (Ex: 讓 “Joeng6”)
They are slightly harder to master than the five Mandarin tones, but again, keep in mind that in a song, the tones don’t really matter all that much. *Also note that “Js” are pronounced as “Ys” in Jyutping Romanized Cantonese. Yale Romanization uses “Y” but I use Jyutping.)
*(If you see a line with a tone written as “#*#” (Ex. Jyun6*2) this is sort of equivalent to “不是” (Bú Shì) in Mandarin, where “Bu” is standardly pronounced as “Bù” but changes to “Bú” if it is directly before another character pronounced with the fourth tone. In my Cantonese dictionary, since it uses numbers for both Cantonese and Mandarin tones, “Bu Shi” is written as “Bu4*2 Shi4” instead “Bú Shì” to show that “Bu” is standardly pronounced with the fourth tone but with this particular word its pronunciation changes to the second tone. So back to the example, “Jyun” in “情願” (Cing4 Jyun6*2), is standardly pronounced as “Jyun6” but in the word “Cing Jyun” it changes to the second tone. This happens a few times throughout the lyrics, but again, the tone isn’t really very important when singing.)
*(In the line, “若你想泄氣 /// 待你添加的無微”, I believe that “無微” (Mou4 Mei4) is a shortened form of the phrase “無微不至” (Mou4 Mei4 Bat1 Zi3) which means “Meticulous” or “Very Carefully and Meticulously”. I could be wrong about this, but I googled the translated definition of “Mou Mei” and all it gave me was “Meticulous”. I went with this, but if I was wrong, then I apologize.)
*(I have three notes for the line, “誰尋覓過誰 /// 沈迷和尋找剎那心碎”. Firstly, the writing for “沈” (Cam4 – also pronounced as “Sam2” when used as a Surname) is a variant writing of “沉” (Cam4). I kept it since it’s the writing used in the lyrics, but I don’t think it really matters which writing you use. “沉” is just the standard writing and “沈” is the variant.
Secondly, the word “剎那” (Saat3 Naa5) is also pronounced as “Saat3 No4”. I believe “Saat Naa” is the standard pronunciation, and it’s the pronunciation used in the song, and “Saat No” is the variant.
And Thirdly, “尋找” (Cam4 Zaau2) means “To Search for Something That is Either Good or Bad” and “尋覓” (Cam4 Mik6) means “To Search for Something That is Good”.)
*(In the line, “想到沒法睡 /// 找到但太累”, “找到” is pronounced two ways: “Zaau2 Dou3*2” and “Caau3 Dou3*2”. “Zaau Dou” is what is being said in the song, but I believe that “Zaau Dou” is the standard pronunciation and also the one used when using standard Chinese in Cantonese pronunciation (usually in Canto-pop songs they write the lyrics in Standard Chinese and pronounce it in Cantonese so that anyone can understand if they read because Cantonese sometimes has slightly different ways to say things, slightly different sentence structure, and some Cantonese-only characters) and “Caau Dou” is used as a variant pronunciation and when speaking in, for lack of a better word, true Cantonese that is not written in Standard Chinese form. I could be wrong about this, so sorry if I was…)
*(In the line, “不要為得到愛過份心虛” “過份” (Gwo3 Fan6) is actually the variant written form of “過分” (Gwo3 Fan6). They both mean the same thing and are pronounced the same way, “過分” is just the more standard writing.)
*(In the line, “可以代他擁抱你 /// 仍然衷心給你默許”, “衷心” has two pronunciations in Cantonese. In Mandarin, it is only pronounced as “Zhōng Xīn” but in Cantonese it can be pronounced as “Cung1 Sam1” or “Zung1 Sam1”. I wasn’t sure which one to use since my dictionary doesn’t say which is the standard pronunciation – leading me to believe they are both pretty interchangeable – but I used “Cung Sam” because I heard Zhou Mi say this. This might not be 100% accurate since Zhou Mi is not a native Cantonese speaker, but since he probably had someone teach Cantonese to him, this is most likely the pronunciation they wanted him to use. I’m pretty sure both pronunciations are correct though.)
*(In the line, “無需要接受寂寞地逃避”, I wasn’t sure which pronunciation to use for “地” (“Dei” – Canto.; “Di/De” – Mandarin). “地” has two pronunciations in both Cantonese and Mandarin: “Dei6” and “Dei6*2” in Cantonese and “Dì” and “De” in Mandarin. “Dei6” is used as the equivalent of “Dì” in Mandarin and these pronunciations mean “Earth; Ground; Place; Area; Field, and, Land”. “Dei6*2” is the equivalent of “De” in Mandarin and these two pronunciations mean “The Adverbial Particle Equivalent to the “Ly” Ending in English” (Ex: Qing Qing De means Gently). I wasn’t really sure which pronunciation to use since I’m not really sure what the character “地” is being used for so I just assumed that it was being used as the adverb particle and went with “Dei6*2”. This is why the translation is “You don’t need to accept the lonely evasion.” If the pronunciation were to be “Dei6” then the line would translate to something like, “You don’t need to accept escaping from this lonely place.” I assumed that the pronunciation is supposed to be “Dei6*2” because I personally don’t think that the sentence is structured right to mean “…From this lonely place.” and I think that if they meant for it to be like that, they would have used the word “地方” (Dì Fāng) to mean “Place.” Again, I might be wrong about this.)
*(In the line, “若你想放棄 /// 讓我靠近你的眉” the literal definition of “眉” (Mei4) is “Brow” as in “Eyebrow” but that doesn’t make much sense. It also means “Side” so I translated it as that because it makes more sense in English.)
*(In the line, “誰人從(來)沒有誰 /// 誰人曾無罪亦沒欠誰”, I have “來” (Loi4) in parenthesis because it’s not actually in the lyrics but I am like 99.9% sure that I heard him say it so I put it in parenthesis just in case. Having “Loi” in the line doesn’t really make a difference to the translation because it is part of the words “Cung Loi” and “Cung Loi Mut Jau”, both of which mean “Always” and “Never” (Cung Loi only means Never if used negatively and Cung Loi Mut Jau is always negative). I just put it in the Jyutping because you can hear it and I wanted my Jyutping to be accurate.)
*(And for my final note, in the line “誰曾備愛誰 /// 沈迷和尋找並沒不對”, there are two pronunciations for “並” (Bing). They are “Bing6” and “Bing3”. “Bing6” is the standard reading and “Bing3” is the variant reading.)
*(I apologize for my excessive notes again, I know they’re long and involved. I am still working on the remaining songs in the EP and I hope to have them uploaded soon. I hope you all enjoyed my translation and please do not claim it as your own. If you would like to use it, please be sure to credit me properly (I may be credited as either chubgyu.tumblr.com or kimsnugglegyu7.wordpress.com). Wow this is incredible!!!
I am from Hong Kong and Canto is my first language. Can’t believe that there is someone like you who likes Canto so much and even put so much effort on studying it… T_T Thanks for loving and supporting Canto and traditional Chinese characters.. Cause the HK government and even some of the HongKongers are giving up Canto and Traditional characters saying that Mandarin and simiplied characters are the “OFFICIAL LANGUAGE” ones…. I am so glad that SM has made a Canto song and once again thanks so much you are brilliant T_T

Oh my gosh, thank you so much! Your comment made my day ^-^ I really love Canto-pop and I’ve been studying Cantonese since the end of 2012 and I really enjoy it. I prefer it over Mandarin actually because I think it’s more fun to pronounce and study and not many non-native speakers know it so it’s unique in the Western world. I’m also a big fan of traditional Chinese characters because I think they are just so pretty and they really uphold the culture. And I’m also really glad SM decided to make a Canto version, it’s different and nice for those who do speak Cantonese and hopefully they’ll do more Canto songs in the future! Also, thank you so much for liking my post and your feedback is much appreciated (I was worried that maybe I didn’t do such a good job…) Thank you so much for your compliments and I hope you’ll visit my blog again ^-^
